Pretty tough few weeks. I've been going to the gym 6 hours a week and feel most body parts getting stronger, leaner and fitter. Most that is except my lower back. I cannot let go of the thought of that 12 degree misalignment. I cannot explain how I feel any other way. Perhaps I need another op. This would involve undoing the previous two so I'm unlikely to find a surgeon willing to give it a go.

Painful,

I read your whole story just about and I was surprised to find that it sounded like my auto biography. I have exactly the same pain as you and in the right side. If I lay on my back with one leg flat and one leg bent and then rotate to the side my whole lower back clicks and gives me temp pain relief. I have been diagnosed with a mild to medium degenarative disk disease at L5/S1. I also have an annular tear in one of the discs in that area. I am in the Army and have had extensive physio (since 2006) on the area without success. Today I foolishly tried to carry a lawn mower from my boot and felt an intense pain shoot down the right side of my back causing me to hunch forward. My fiance is almost finished her massage therapist course so was able to provide temp relief; however, it is still quite sore. I am at my wits end to have this problem sorted but having the same answers you get, do this exercise and this stretch and you will be right!! I had cortizone injections in my facet joints at the thoracic spine this year as I injured my upper back whilst attempting a rebound in basketball in 2004!! Yes still pain to this day in that area too. Anyway thought I would share my story with you also.

All the best

Dave!!

Hi Dave,

Sorry to hear you're struggling but I hope you're well covered by insurance.

Last week I learned of a Taiwanese therapist who uses what sounds like a Chinese form of Alexander Technique. I realize it's miles away from where you are but if I had the occasion to visit Taiwan, I would look into that.

I know Aussie doctors are very reluctant to operate, but that doesn't mean it's not a good idea for some people. Still, there are now many types of minimally invasive procedures which I wish I'd had available to me, and some are not available in Melbourne.

I know how tough (impossible?) it is to try and exercise your core muscles when you have a massive spasm in your back. Keep looking for non-surgical answers, though, and if you run out of ideas, I'm here for you.
